Modern Marvel

Star Wars (2015) #1 Premiere Variant

It was reported in early December 2014 that Star Wars #1 was going to sell over a million copies.  As a thank you, Marvel Comics mailed out 2 copies of the Star Wars (2015) #1 premiere variant to retailers.  Each copy was personalized for the store.  Because Marvel personalized these issues and mailed them to retailers, some retailers received their 2 copies as early as a few weeks before Star Wars #1 went on sale on January 14th. Consequentially, some received their 2 copies after Star Wars #1 was shipped to retailers.

Star Wars #1p - Marvel Comics, U.S. (January 2015)
Premiere variant
The premiere variant uses the same artwork as the standard cover but with half of the cover art in color and half in black and white.

There is a misconception by some collectors that these comics were only sent to retailers who participated in the Star Wars launch party on January 14th.  This is not true.  All retailers who ordered Star Wars #1 received 2 copies of the premiere variant.  Only retailers who participated in the launch party received 2 copies of the Star Wars #1 party sketch variant.
